A Word From Marty
Tempering Expectations by Marty
March 2, 2010, 5:55 pm
But now it's spring and every year we head to Padres spring training in Peoria with the usual feelings of cynicism after we look at the payroll, consider what their rivals in the NL West have done, wonder who's going to be traded, try and estimate how many games below .500 the Padres will finish and declare this the year we'll come up with a Padres drinking game to make the season bearable.

Lessons Learned From 1-and-Done in 06
December 30, 2009, 6:07 pm
I don’t know if it was too big for us then, maybe it was, but now, we’ve since that game won in Indy, won at home against Indy, won at home against Tennessee, been in the AFC Championship game, we’ve gone to Pittsburgh, so this is a much more battle-tested and experienced group to where I know, uh, when 2 ½ weeks rolls around, it won’t be too big for us."

In The Nick Of Time
December 21, 2009, 5:20 pm
I don't know if AJ Smith and Norv Turner ever foresaw so many injuries to their offensive line, but they kept Hardwick off IR in the hopes that he would be able to return in time for the playoffs, when his superior athletic ability and experience could be the deciding factor. Who knew that Mooch would go down leaving nine-year veteran Dennis Norman as the next to go down in center? But it looks as though Hardwick could be ready to go against the Tennessee Titans this Friday when the team needs him most- and yes, in the nick of time.

Child Please- Merriman Won't Engage Ocho-Whatever
December 16, 2009, 5:07 pm
Ocho wasn't done today and neither was Merriman. During the conference call, Ocho said Merriman might be the only guy he truly dislikes and would whip his ass right now, comparing it to a butt-kicking in the Will Ferrell movie "Step Brothers." So because I love to dredge things up like this, that really have no implication on the game on the field, I ran down Merriman after practice today to get his thoughts on Ocho's comments.

Why Rivers Enjoys Denver
November 19, 2009, 4:33 pm
When Rivers talks about some of his more authentic spaz-outs, his first Denver win always comes to mind. "Yeah, that was just after the comeback against Cincinnati, I think. You still can remember some of those plays like they were yesterday and then we kind of got the season back going two years ago. We had a big win there, like 41-3 when we started off 1-2, I think, so we’ve had some success there. Like I always say, every game is a new game, stands on its own, hopefully we can keep it going."

Who's To Blame For The Run Game?
November 11, 2009, 5:09 pm
We may see the accumulative numbers that LaDainian Tomlinson, who is really one of the great all-time backs in my opinion, and you saw it coming off the injuries last year, we may be seeing the accumulation of those hits and that length in the league because he doesn’t seem to have quite the same pop that I remember seeing a few years back.

LaDainian Tomlinson On The Oakland Raiders

Time For A Fast Start & Merriman Q&A
October 15, 2009, 4:39 pm
I caught up with Shawne Merriman after practice on Thursday and asked him about the importance of the team getting off to at fast start (yes I know that sounds so cliche) but just think how the sellout crowd will react if they start off slow...again!

The Ouster of Kevin Towers
October 4, 2009, 3:45 pm
Judging from the response of the local and national media, this is not a popular decision. Towers is as well-liked an individual as there is in the tight-knit baseball world and what he's been able to accomplish through ownership changes, CEO's running in and out, and miniscule payroll is nothing short of a miracle. Just imagine what he could do with real resources.

Merriman on Defense & Miami's Run Game
September 27, 2009, 10:08 am
The Dolphins offense had the ball for 45 minutes on Monday Night against the Colts but lost in the final moments on you guessed it, a game-winning touchdown by the tight end Dallas Clark. In the week before, it was Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez who caused them trouble. After just two weeks, Miami's defense has given up 5 catches for 256 yards and two TD's to the tight end. This week, they face maybe their biggest challenge yet in trying to contain Antonio Gates.

Darren and Marty Are Officially Losers
September 24, 2009, 4:32 pm
But after endless of months of threats, cajoling, tears, pleading and eye-rolling, I've finally caved in and decided to join the evil network that is Twitter. That's right, Darren Smith and Marty Caswell are official tweeting losers. After calling anyone that has a twitter account an attention whore, well the pot's now calling the kettle black.

Lager Lessons with Marty- and Meet The Chargers Players Too
September 23, 2009, 5:16 pm
I want to let you guys know that I'll be at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park Thursday from 6-8 PM for a very cool event- Lager Lessons with Budweiser. Yes, I know I pretend to know everything about everything, but now I'm going to pretend to know everything about beer! It's going to be a very fun time. Kassim Osgood and Vaughn Martin of the Chargers will be there as well

The Chargers Lack Depth- Not Talent
September 22, 2009, 2:41 pm
Norv Turner is taking quite a bit of heat for the comments he made in his Monday press conference following the Chargers 31-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He had started off by saying the team isn't as good as fans or the media thinks they are. And with the major injuries they've taken after only one game, losing no less than three Pro Bowl Starters, he's absolutely right

Oops! Cromartie Does It Again
September 11, 2009, 3:19 pm
You thought he might learn from the $2500 fine that was imposed by the Chargers when he tweeted to complain about the quality of the food in training camp and said maybe that was the reason the Chargers can't get to the Super Bowl. Well, apparently not, because Antonio Cromartie is at it again.

Larry English Discusses NFL Debut & Rookie Dinner
September 9, 2009, 2:51 pm

Reality Trash Versus Bad Judgment
September 7, 2009, 7:35 pm
To be fair, you can't always predict the true character of the people you hang out with. Let me state that I don't believe for a second that Merriman did what Tequila says he did. But I'm disappointed that he put himself in that position by hanging out with disreputable trash. And Tila Tequila is nothing but a trashy, reality show whore. Period.

Norv Turner Sees Kyle Blanks as a Tight End
August 18, 2009, 2:15 pm
Padres outfielder Kyle Blanks and pitcher Mike Adams accompanied me to Chargers training camp this morning. Blanks, who stands a lithe 6-6, 280 pounds looks like he could easily belong on the field with the offensive lineman. But Norv Turner took one look at him and asked if he'd like to play tight end for the Chargers.

Lost Identity
August 3, 2009, 2:34 pm
For as long as I've been a baseball and Padres fan, the team has always had a player that you immediately associated with, whether it be the great Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman or Jake Peavy. The trade of Peavy to the White Sox for four essentially unproven ballplayers has left this team and city without an identity for what used to be a proud sports franchise.

AJ Smith Doesn't Like Reality TV
July 28, 2009, 3:52 pm
"I just think it’s a tremendous distraction. It’s absolutely entertaining and I think as far as I’m concerned, it’s a distraction. I think it’s fake, I think it’s phony, I think it’s put on, I think it’s basically a motion picture. And anyone that wants to be in the motion picture business, or enjoy that stuff, they buy into it, they enjoy it, the fake phone call conversations, the fake chatter, the whole thing is a joke and Dean Spanos said it was my call and I made it very quickly."

Chargers Open Training Camp
July 27, 2009, 3:23 pm
Ahhh...finally! Chargers Training camp has finally arrived and considering the state of the sports in San Diego, it's not at a moment too soon. Darren Smith did his show from Chargers Park, (which is where we'll be the the next two days) on the first official day which featured all the signed rookies, the three QB's and select veterans. Larry English, who hasn't signed, and USC safety Kevin Ellison who is close, were the only exceptions.

Gonzalez Would Like Strategic Off-Day
July 21, 2009, 12:06 pm
It wasn't that long ago that Adrian Gonzalez was leading the Majors in home runs with 24 and a batting average that hovered around .300. But in the past month, as the team continues to crumble and the Padres surely but slowly start to trade players that offered him the best protection in the lineup (and coincidentally are arbitration-eligible after the season) his offensive numbers have declined while his consecutive games played streak remains intact.

Rivers Defends Getting LeBron-ed
July 16, 2009, 1:10 pm
Chargers QB Billy Volek joined the show on Tuesday, and discussed getting a phone call from Philip Rivers earlier that morning. Rivers left a message that there were only 14 days left until training camp and how he simply he couldn't wait for it to start. I relayed this exchange to Stephen Cooper when he came in-studio later that day, and he just said "I can't wait. Let's go

Brian Giles Ponders His Future
June 29, 2009, 8:39 pm
Brian Giles makes no excuses about the worst season of his professional career. “It’s obviously frustrating,” Giles said on Monday, shortly before the Padres took on the Astros. “We’re not winning. I haven’t done much offensively and now with this injury it’s been real frustrating.” Not doing much offensively would be the understatement of the year.

Thoughts on Michael Jackson
June 25, 2009, 3:42 pm
This isn't sports news whatsoever or even remotely relevant to my normal thoughts on Padres and Chargers and steroids or whatever, but the shocking news of pop superstar Michael Jackson's death came through while I was attempting to listen to the Padres game and texting people about how bad Wade LeBlanc is. I was stunned. I am still stunned beyond belief.

Padres Say No to David Justice
June 23, 2009, 4:22 pm
With the departure of Trevor Hoffman, the Padres have become a team without leadership or identity. So naturally, when former MLB superstar David Justice offers the Padres his free assistance as a batting coach and mentor of the game to the young players of this team, of course the Padres would jump at the opportunity without hesitation and say…NO.
